The Smokehouse apple was discovered around 1800 as a chance open-pollinated seedling on a farm in Pennsylvania. The original seedling grew right next to the farm's smokehouse, giving the apple its name. It is believed to be a seedling of the ancient American variety, Vandevere. Smokehouse is a premier all-purpose apple. Crisp, dense, very juicy, and exceptionally tasty right off the tree with a distinct "fresh-cider" flavor. A historic culinary favorite that holds its shape beautifully in pies, tarts, and fried apple dishes. Frequently used in hard and fresh cider blends due to its rich subacid qualities.An excellent keeper that resists browning and stores well for 3 to 4 months (sometimes through late winter). Grows in USDA zones 3-9. Mid-Season bloom period.
