OUR STORY

Discover the Cortland Apple: A Century-Old Classic Perfect for Your Orchard! Bred in New York in 1898, the Cortland apple is the ultimate all-purpose fruit, famously combining a rich history with unbeatable kitchen performance. Whether you want to bite into a crisp, juicy snack or bake a blue-ribbon pie, the Cortland delivers every single time. 📜 A Century of American Heritage Born at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, the Cortland is a proud descendant of the famous McIntosh and Ben Davis varieties. It inherits the beloved, aromatic qualities of the McIntosh but features an improved, more robust growth habit that has made it a staple of backyard orchards for over 125 years. 🍏 Refreshing, Sweet-Tart Flavor Cortland apples offer a crisp, fine-grained bite bursting with juice. The flavor is a perfect harmony of sweet and tart, with a subtle vinous richness and light berry notes. Best of all, its snow-white flesh is slow to brown, making it the absolute best choice for fresh salads, fruit platters, and charcuterie boards. 🥧 The Ultimate All-Purpose Kitchen Companion • Baking: Holds its shape beautifully in pies, tarts, and galettes. • Sauces: Cooks down into a velvety, naturally pink-tinted applesauce when prepared with the skins on. • Ciders: Yields a high volume of sweet, tangy juice for fresh or hard ciders. 🏡 Grower's Profile & Essential Cultivation Specs Cortland apple trees are exceptionally cold-hardy and thrive best in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 3 through 8. To help you successfully grow this legendary variety, here are the key agricultural requirements for the Cortland tree: • Chill Hours: Requires 800 to 1,000 hours below 45°F (7°C) during winter dormancy, making it ideal for northern and mid-western climates. • Bloom Time: Mid-season. The tree produces a beautiful blanket of white and pink blossoms in mid-spring. • Pollination Partners: Cortland is not self-fertile and requires a cross-pollinator that blooms at the same time. Excellent partners include McIntosh, Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Golden Delicious. Trees are bench grafted 1/4-3/16 inch diameter and 1 1/2 to 2 feet tall when shipped.
