The Red Astrachan apple tree's origins are in Astrakhan, Russia, before the 1800's. It was brought to the United States 1835. Red Astrachan apple is a sweet apple with strong acidity. The flesh is firm, and tart. The Red Astrachan apples have been said to make the best apple pie. They are known for bursting their skin when they become over-ripe so pick when ripe. Grows in USDA zones 4-10. Tree is self fertile. Trees are bench grafted 1/4-3/16 inch diameter and 1 1/2 to 2 feet tall when shipped.
