(Zones 4-9) A great all purpose apple with an interesting story!
Available on both Bud 9 and MM111 Rootstock.
The Bloody Ploughman is a rare heirloom apple variety originating from the Carse of Gowrie in Scotland, first recorded around 1883. The story is that a gamekeeper shot dead a ploughman caught stealing apples from the Megginch Estate. When his body was returned to his wife, she found stolen apples in his pockets and threw them onto a rubbish heap. One of the resulting seedlings bore apples of a deep, blood red. This tree gave rise to the apple that was named after the ploughman. The Bloody Ploughman is crisp and juicy with a sweet, light flavour. Blood-red skin and heavily ribbed. When ripe, the flesh inside can be stained pink. The Bloody Ploughman has a sweet, mild, and crisp flavor profile, with many apple enthusiasts noting a subtle, unusual berry-like undertone. It is a fresh eating as well as a cooking apple. Grows in USDA zones 4-9. Bloody Ploughman apple trees bloom in mid-spring and require a compatible cross-pollinator. Consider the Braeburn apple as a self-fertile mid season bloomer as a pollinator for the Bloody Ploughman.
